Toxin-free Spring Cleaning
It's that time of year again, the sun has finally made an appearance and it's time to start thinking about Spring Cleaning.
Regular cleaning products, created by large parent companies, are normally packed full of synthetic chemicals which can lead to health issues for you and your family. The term 'Volatile Organic Compounds' or VOCs are chemicals that easily evaporate into the air at room temperature. They are found in many everyday products like cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and even some cosmetics.
Some VOCs, like those from essential oils, are relatively harmless, but others, such as formaldehyde and benzene, can contribute to indoor air pollution and have negative health effects. High levels of VOCs can cause headaches, dizziness, respiratory irritation, and long-term exposure may be linked to more serious health issues.
These aren't readily advertised in the supermarket, but items such as Zoflora, Mr Muscle oven cleaner and Airwick air freshener all have high level of VOCs. So here's some cleaning alternatives:
Surfaces
Lavender Anti-bacterial Surface Spray
Perfect for everyday use around the kitchen, for spills and daily messes made. The ingredients are made up of natural perfumes so is considered low-VOC. It's also been certified to multiple BS EN numbers which means it's suitable for food businesses, such as cafes, to use too.
OceanSaver Pods
The best-selling cleaning items for our nationwide customers. Did you know a lot of supermarket cleaning products are made using a high water content? These concentrated pods come in a variety of scents and uses. The multi-purpose, anti-bac and disinfectant pods are the most appropriate for surfaces around the home.
Bathroom
Citric Acid
The perfect all-rounder. Citric acid is a natural, plant-derived acid (from citrus fruits like lemons and oranges) that is commonly used in cleaning products for its degreasing, descaling, and antibacterial properties. It is a low-VOC, non-toxic alternative to harsher chemical cleaners.
It removes limescale like a dream: throw down the toilet to remove water marks or add to a spray bottle (2tsp to a 500ml bottle of warm water) and use on shower glass daily. It's also deodorising, which means it neutralises odours by breaking down alkaline residues (e.g., from hard water or soap scum).
Bicarbonate of Soda + White Vinegar
White vinegar might be our all time favourite cleaner and mixed with bicarb, it's a match made in heaven.
Make a natural drain cleaner by popping a couple of teaspoons down your plug and adding a splash of white vinegar. Let the mixture fizz and do its thing for five minutes before pouring hot water down the sink.
Deep cleaning
Scrub Powder
Our best selling cleaning product, and for a good reason. This is the superhero of all cleaners. Mix with washing-up liquid or water to create a powerful cream cleaner. Great for those deep cleaning jobs and works on all surfaces, ceramic, glass and regular countertops.
This is particularly great for baked on grime, such as oven cleaning.
Not only will your home and loved-ones thank you for toxin-free cleaning but the planet will too.
