Old Growler – Porter 5.0% | Nethergate

Rich, award-winning Suffolk porter with dark chocolate, treacle and dried-fruit notes.

Old Growler is Nethergate’s legendary 5.0% porter – a dark, full-bodied beer that’s been winning fans (and medals) since the late 1980s. It started life as a Christmas seasonal, but its popularity quickly turned it into a year-round classic, named after the founder’s English bulldog.

A blend of dark malts gives layers of chocolate, coffee, treacle and fruitcake, while traditional Fuggles and Challenger hops add earthy bitterness and balance. It pours near-black with a ruby glint, a creamy head and a long, warming finish that makes it as good by the fire as it is with dinner.

FAQs

What does Old Growler taste like?
Expect a rich, malty porter with notes of chocolate, coffee, treacle and dark fruit, balanced by a firm but smooth bitterness. It’s full-flavoured without being cloying and finishes surprisingly moreish for a darker beer.

What food does it pair with?
Brilliant with pies, stews, sausages, roasted root veg, strong cheddar, stilton and chocolate desserts. It also works beautifully as a slow-cooking beer for beef or mushroom stews.
