Handmade Raw Beeswax Honeycomb Pillar Candles - Five Bees Yard

Solid pillar candles made from 100% pure raw beeswax, with a honeycomb texture and a naturally warm honey scent. No chemicals, no colourants, no additives - just beeswax and an unbleached cotton wick.

Most products sold as "beeswax" candles contain only 10-20% actual beeswax, bulked out with cheap synthetic waxes and chemicals. These contain nothing but wax. Because they're completely natural and handmade, each candle is unique in shape and colour - ranging from pale yellow through to deep amber or brown depending on the season.

How To Use

Tilt the candle to one side when lighting and hold the flame to the wick for longer than you would with a regular candle. Beeswax has a high melting point (minimum 63°C, compared to 30-45°C for paraffin) so it needs more time to catch properly.

For the first burn, let the candle continue until a pool of wax forms across the full surface - this prevents tunnelling. Keep away from draughts, air conditioning and open fires for an even burn.

Trim the wick to 4-5mm before each use. A longer wick means a higher flame, more soot and a shorter overall burn time.

About Five Bees Yard

Five Bees Yard is a family project and third-generation beekeeping operation in Hertfordshire. They run three apiaries using the same methods as their grandparents - no chemicals in or around the hives, no bleaching of the wax, and no shortcuts.

Every candle is handmade using liquid beeswax, an unbleached cotton wick, and their hands. No machines, no moulds, no additives. Colour varies batch to batch - from pale yellow to deep amber - depending on the season and which plants the bees were foraging from.

Why Beeswax?

Beeswax is considered the most natural of all waxes. It burns cleanly, produces minimal soot, and lasts longer than paraffin or soy alternatives. It's also thought to emit negative ions as it burns, which may help improve air quality.

Paraffin is a petrochemical product. Soy wax goes through significant chemical processing and its production contributes to deforestation. Beeswax is simply what bees produce - no extraction processes, no plantations, no additives required.

Candle Care & Safety

Raw beeswax may develop a white, crystalline bloom on the surface over time. This is completely natural and a sign of high-quality unprocessed wax. If you prefer the original yellow colour, simply buff with a soft cloth.

Place on a heat-resistant surface or tray - not directly on furniture. High temperatures can discolour surfaces and beeswax drips can mark. Never leave a lit candle unattended, and take extra care if children or animals are nearby.

FAQs

Which size should I choose?
The small gives around 15 hours of burn time and the large around 30 hours. If you want something for occasional use or as a gift, the small is a lovely option. For everyday use or longer burns, go for the large.

Why does my candle look different to the photo?
Because it's genuinely natural and handmade. Colour ranges from pale yellow to deep amber depending on the season and which plants the bees were foraging from. Each one is slightly different.

What's the white coating on the surface?
That's bloom - a natural process where oils in the wax rise to the surface. It's harmless and a sign of quality. Buff with a soft cloth if you'd prefer the yellow colour.

Are these vegan?
No - they're made from beeswax.
