About Five Bees Yard
Five Bees Yard is a family project connecting people with nature. Third-generation beekeepers, they keep three apiaries using the same methods passed down from their grandparents - no chemicals in or around the hives, no bleaching of the wax, no shortcuts.
Every candle is made by hand using liquid beeswax and an unbleached cotton wick. No moulds, no machines. What you get is as close to nature as a candle can be.
Why Beeswax?
Beeswax burns cleaner and longer than paraffin or soy, producing less soot. It has a naturally higher melting point, which means a steadier flame and longer burn life. It also emits a gentle natural honey scent as it burns.
Paraffin is a petrochemical product. Soy wax involves chemical processing and often comes from deforested land. Beeswax is simply what bees produce during nectar collection - no human intervention required beyond the harvest.
Candle Care
Lighting
Hold the flame to the wick for a little longer than you would with a regular candle. Beeswax has a much higher melting point than paraffin or soy, so the wick needs more time to fully catch. Make sure both the wick and the surrounding wax are burning before you pull away.
Ongoing care
Keep the wick trimmed to 4-5mm for the cleanest burn. A longer wick means a higher flame and more soot. Burn away from draughts for best results, and never leave a lit candle unattended.
Beeswax bloom
Raw beeswax naturally develops a white haze or bloom over time as low-melting-point oils migrate to the surface. This is a sign of quality unprocessed wax, not a fault. Buff it off with a soft cloth if you prefer the original colour.
FAQs
Do cups come with these tealights?
No - these are refills only. They're designed to be placed into tealight cups you already own. Do not burn them without a cup as the beeswax will spill.
What size cups do I need?
Standard tealight cups work fine. The tealights are approximately 16mm tall and 37mm in diameter - the same size as a regular tealight.
How long do they burn?
Approximately 3 hours per tealight with a properly trimmed wick and no draughts nearby.
Are these vegan?
No - they're made from beeswax, which is an animal-derived product.
Why does the colour vary?
Five Bees Yard don't bleach or treat their wax, so colour depends on the hive and what the bees were foraging. Expect anything from pale yellow to deep amber - this is normal and natural.
