Handmade Raw Beeswax Dinner Candles - Five Bees Yard

Real beeswax candles - not the factory blend you'll find most places. These are made with 100% pure, triple-filtered raw beeswax, handcrafted using ancient techniques passed down through generations in Hertfordshire.

Most "beeswax" candles on the market contain only 10-20% actual beeswax, padded out with cheap synthetic waxes and chemicals. These contain nothing but wax, an unbleached cotton wick, and the work of bees. No moulds, no machines, no additives.

Because they're completely natural, each candle is unique in shape and colour - ranging from pale yellow through to deep amber or brown depending on the season and which plants the bees were foraging from.

Two-packs are unpackaged, and three-packs come wrapped in paper with a kraft tag - making the three-pack a lovely gift.

  • Two or three taper dinner candles per pack
  • Approx. 20cm high x 2cm wide
  • Approx. 4 hour burn time per candle
  • 100% pure raw beeswax - no chemicals, no colourants, no additives
  • Triple-filtered, high-quality beeswax
  • Unbleached cotton wick
  • Handmade with ancient techniques in Hertfordshire, UK
  • Plastic-free packaging

How To Use

To secure the candle in a holder, drip a few drops of melted beeswax into the holder cup and press the candle in place, or sharpen the base slightly to fit the candleholder's eye.

Tilt the candle to one side when lighting and hold the flame to the wick for longer than you would with a regular candle. Beeswax has a high melting point (minimum 63°C, compared to 30-45°C for paraffin) so the wick needs a little more time to catch properly.

For the first burn, let the candle continue until you can see a pool of wax across the full width - this prevents tunnelling. Keep the candle away from draughts, air conditioning and open fires for an even burn.

Trim the wick to 4-5mm before each use. A long wick means a higher flame, more soot and a shorter overall burn time.

About Five Bees Yard

Five Bees Yard is a family project and third-generation beekeeping operation in Hertfordshire. They run three apiaries using the same methods as their grandparents - no chemicals in or around the hives, no bleaching of the wax, and no shortcuts.

Every candle is handmade using liquid beeswax, an unbleached cotton wick, and their hands. That's it. The result is a candle that varies batch to batch in colour and subtle scent - because that's what naturally happens when you work with a living, seasonal material.

Why Beeswax?

Beeswax is considered the most natural of all waxes. It burns cleanly, produces minimal soot, and lasts longer than paraffin or soy alternatives. It's also thought to emit negative ions as it burns, which may help improve air quality.

Paraffin is a petrochemical product. Soy wax goes through significant chemical processing and its production contributes to deforestation. Beeswax is simply what bees produce - no extraction processes, no plantations, no additives required.

Candle Care & Safety

Raw beeswax may develop a white, crystalline bloom on the surface over time. This is completely natural - it just means the lower-melting-point oils in the wax are rising to the surface. It's actually a sign of high-quality, unprocessed beeswax. If you prefer the original yellow colour, simply buff with a soft cloth.

Place candles on a heat-resistant holder or tray - not directly on furniture. High temperatures can discolour surfaces and beeswax drips can mark. Never leave a lit candle unattended, and take extra care if children or animals are nearby.

FAQs

What's the difference between the 2-pack and 3-pack?
The 2-pack is unpackaged, while the 3-pack comes wrapped in paper with a kraft tag - making it a great option as a gift.

Why do the candles vary in colour?
Because they're made from completely unbleached, natural beeswax. Colour varies depending on which part of the hive the wax comes from and which plants the bees were foraging from that season. Every batch is slightly different - that's part of what makes them genuinely natural.

What's that white coating on the candle?
That's bloom - a natural and harmless process where oils in the wax rise to the surface. It's actually a good sign. If you prefer the yellow look, just buff it with a soft cloth.

How do I fit these in a candle holder?
Either drip a small amount of melted wax into the holder cup and press the candle in, or carefully sharpen the base to fit the holder's eye.

Are these vegan?
No - they're made from beeswax.
