Five ingredients, Welsh cream and butter, and Halen Mon sea salt. Rich, smooth and salty enough to know about it.
This is the one that built the range and it won two stars at the Great Taste Awards. There is nothing clever going on - cream, sugar, butter, golden syrup and sea salt, cooked properly - which is exactly why it works. The salt is there to cut the sweetness rather than to be a gimmick, so it stops short of the sickly territory most jarred caramels end up in.
Spread it on toast or crumpets, stir it through porridge, or warm it gently and pour it over ice cream.
Cream (milk), sugar, butter (milk), golden syrup, salt, Halen Mon sea salt 0.76%.
Made in a kitchen handling gluten, soya, nuts and milk.
Does it need refrigerating?
Not until it is open. Once opened, keep it in the fridge and use within a few weeks - it will firm up when cold, so give it a few minutes out or warm it gently.
Can I use it for baking?
Yes. It works well as a filling for cakes and brownies, or warmed and used as a drizzle. It is a set caramel rather than a pourable sauce, so warm it if you want it loose.
How is it different from the chocolate and hazelnut versions?
Those are both built on this exact caramel - one with Belgian milk chocolate blended in, one with hazelnut butter. This is the original.
Crwst started in 2018 as a bakery and cafe in Aberteifi (Cardigan) in west Wales, and the spreads came out of the bakehouse recipes. Everything is made in small batches with Welsh cream, Welsh butter and Pembrokeshire sea salt. They are now stocked as far afield as Selfridges, which for a Cardigan bakery is no small thing.
