What's the problem with coffee cups?

Back in 2011, a report by Which? found the UK used 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups a year.

The coffee industry has grown considerably since then and the UK is now predicted to use 3.75 billion disposable coffee cups per year.

That equates to over 10 million disposable coffee cups every single day in the UK alone.

These paper coffee cups have a plastic lining and only around 1% of "recyclable" disposable coffee cups are actually recycled. The rest end up being incinerated, littered and in landfill where they could take hundreds of years to break down.

Why Circular&Co? Why these coffee cups?

The most sustainable coffee cup is the one you already own. However, people aren't using the cups they already own.

What are these reusable coffee cups made from?

We have two types of reusable coffee cup to choose from, one made from recycled paper cups, and one from recycled stainless steel.

Recycled Paper Cups

Certain parts of any reusable cup must be food-safe, so 60% of these cups are currently made from virgin plastic which is 40% better than most on the market. Circular&Co will keep working to improve this. They're currently working on a new food-grade recycled plastic with their partners, and hope to release the world’s first 100% recycled cup in the EU and UK as soon as legislation allows.

Even though they're made with 60% virgin plastic, they're designed to last at least 10 years, are 100% recyclable and have a takeback promise to ensure they are recycled and used properly, keeping these cups as circular as possible.

Recycled Stainless Steel

These coffee cups are made with 90% post-consumer recycled stainless steel, which is vacuumed and 304 Grade. They are not plastic-free but are 100% recyclable, repairable and returnable to Circular&Co to ensure the recycling works properly.

Are these reusable coffee cups insulated?

They are. The cups made from recycled paper cups will keep your coffee hot for up to 90 minutes - far longer than a disposable cup and should be plenty of time to drink your drink!

If you did want something to keep your drinks hotter for longer, the cup made from recycled stainless steel will maintain that temperature for up to six hours - more of a travel mug than a direct replacement to disposable to-go cups.
