Traditional Somerset cider with a measure of pure cloudy apple juice stirred back in. Softer, rounder and easier going than a straight dry cider.
Cloudy cider is harder to get right than it looks. Too much juice and it turns into apple squash with an edge; too little and there is no point. Sheppy's blend keeps the tannin and the bittersweet apple structure of their traditional cider, then softens the middle with juice so it drinks gently at 4.5%.
This is the one to reach for if the dry Somerset style is usually a bit much, and it is very good with a ploughman's.
Contains sulphites.
Why is it cloudy?
Because cloudy apple juice is blended back into the finished cider. The haze is fruit, not a fault, and it carries most of the softness you taste.
Should I pour it all out or leave the sediment?
Pour it all. There is nothing to leave behind in the bottle and the cloudiness is the point.
How does it compare to Vintage Reserve?
Vintage Reserve is the serious one - oak-matured, full-bodied and 7.4%. Original Cloudy is the everyday version: lighter, sweeter and much easier to have two of.
Sheppy's have been making cider at Three Bridges Farm in Somerset since 1816, and the family is now six generations deep. The orchards are their own, the fermentation is natural, and the range has stayed pointed at proper cider rather than fashion.
