PÄRLA Moso Bamboo Toothbrush

Most bamboo toothbrushes solve half the problem. The handle composts, but the bristles are nylon, which means snapping the head off and binning it, or quietly composting plastic into your garden. This one is different: the bristles are made from castor beans, so the whole brush goes in the compost.

The handle is Moso bamboo, the fast-growing species that pandas do not eat and do not live among, so there is no habitat trade-off. Parla's dentist founders shaped the head to reach around the back teeth, and the bristle ends are rounded so they clean thoroughly without being harsh on gums.

  • Moso bamboo handle, fully compostable
  • Plant-based bristles made from castor beans, not nylon
  • Rounded bristle ends, gentler on gums
  • Head shaped to reach the back teeth
  • Panda-friendly bamboo
  • Plastic-free packaging
  • Vegan, no boar or horse hair

How to Use

Brush twice a day for two minutes, covering the inside, outside and biting surface of every tooth. Rinse and shake the brush after use, then stand it upright somewhere it can dry out, because bamboo lasts longer when it is not sitting in water. Replace roughly every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles splay.

FAQs

Are the bristles really plastic-free?
Yes. They are made from castor bean oil rather than the nylon used in most bamboo brushes. That is the difference worth paying attention to when comparing bamboo toothbrushes.

How firm are the bristles?
Designed for everyday use and gentle enough for daily brushing. If you have been told to use a soft brush for gum recession, check with your dentist first.

Will the handle go mouldy?
Not if it dries between uses. Keep it upright and out of standing water, and avoid a closed travel case unless the brush is dry.

How long does it last?
Three to four months, the same as any manual brush. Parla's founders suggest four.

Can I compost the whole thing?
Yes. Handle and bristles are both compostable, so there is no need to snap the head off.
